The top number is the guitar model number, in this example this is a D-18. Changes included cutaways on archtops, natural finish on some f-hole guitars and mandolins, and a line of nylon string acoustics. But once they started this numbering system they estimated that they had built 8347 guitars before starting the system - so the first one in the system is 8348. The guitars ended up being finished as -09 instruments without the inlays 3-4 years later. Contact the factory for production dates on those instruments.
